African American art was a little known and not readily available commodity before the 1980s. Not that artists weren't painting and creating works of art, but there were no formal marketing and distribution of the works. Slowly, through a combination of inspiration and determination, a fledgling company with a vision of what was possible, Edward Robertson (TGFA President) began approaching artists with a plan to publish and distribute their works to create a new market segment comprising art about and by African-Americans.

"In 1984, Things Graphics & Fine Art, Washington, D.C. set out to establish a market for African American art by serving not only as a distribution point, but also as resource to dealers and artists. "Ed [Robertson, president] was one of the first people I met that was interested in publishing pieces of Black art. I was impressed with his tenacity and with his basic urgency to distribute Black artwork at a level where most people could afford to purchase it." -artist Paul Goodnight
"As a visual artist who has been painting for 30 years, when I first discovered an African American owned art business, I was very excited. I will continue to always support Things Graphics & Fine Art because they were there at the beginning when we [Black artists] needed support." -artist Frank Frazier |
